Decarbonization

6 May 2026

Decarbonizing ships has become a major challenge in the quest for a sustainable future for the maritime sector. Given that the oceans are vital to global trade and play a crucial role in the global economy, it is imperative to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint in order to mitigate the effects of climate change and address future challenges.

Numerous regulations are now being implemented to accelerate this decarbonization, notably the International Maritime Organization’s agreement aimed at halving greenhouse gas emissions.

Ships are largely dependent on fossil fuels, which results in the emission of significant amounts of greenhouse gases.

Many approaches are currently being explored to adopt more environmentally friendly solutions. These include alternative energy sources such as electric motors, sail propulsion, and the use of hydrogen and biofuels. These alternatives show significant potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector and thus moving toward cleaner and more sustainable shipping.
