Join Mr. Goodfish3.0 and VeriFish Event for #EUGreenWeek

6 May 2026

To mark Sustainable Gastronomy Day on June 18, 2025, as part of European Green Week, the EU-funded Mr.Goodfish3.0 and VeriFish projects will host a special online event titled “Can We Still Eat Seafood? Adopting Responsible Consumption and Production of Seafood, Freshwater and Aquaculture Products to Protect Marine Biodiversity.” This timely discussion will examine how responsible choices regarding seafood can support marine ecosystems while ensuring food systems and livelihoods for future generations.

About the Event

With 37.7% of wild seafood stocks currently overexploited (FAO, 2024), the future of seafood is under close scrutiny. But the question is no longer whether we can continue to eat seafood, but rather how we can do so responsibly. This virtual event will bring together a panel of experts to discuss strategies for aligning seafood production and consumption with ecological, economic, and social sustainability.

Set against the backdrop of Sustainable Gastronomy Day, the session will highlight how circular economy principles—such as waste reduction, efficiency improvements, and the promotion of inclusive practices—can transform the seafood sector. From consumer education to supply chain transparency, the focus will be on practical and innovative solutions to ensure seafood remains a viable and ethical food choice.

This 90-minute webinar will address key topics such as:

  • Raising consumer awareness of responsible seafood choices
  • Integrating circular economy practices into seafood production and supply chains
  • Supporting small-scale fisheries and sustainable aquaculture
  • Building a resilient and inclusive blue economy that benefits both communities and ecosystems.

This roundtable will provide a platform for dialogue among industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and sustainability advocates. Above all, it will be an opportunity to begin contributing to the shift toward a more sustainable ecosystem.

Meet the organizers

Mr.Goodfish3.0 builds on a successful awareness campaign aimed at promoting responsible consumption of seafood. The initiative, now in its third phase, is expanding its reach across Europe by enhancing the Mr.Goodfish app and creating tools for engagement with local stakeholders in five different marine and freshwater regions. The goal: to empower citizens to make informed choices that support both ocean health and coastal economies.

VeriFish is developing an innovative framework of verifiable sustainability indicators for seafood, using European and global data. By combining a prototype web application, sector-specific communication tools, and practical guidelines for the retail and hospitality sectors, VeriFish strives to improve transparency and trust in what sustainable seafood truly means—from catch to kitchen.

Both projects are funded under Horizon Europe and contribute to the EU’s “Restore our Ocean & Waters” mission. Together, they aim to drive meaningful change through collaboration, transparency, and innovation.
