Committees: How They Work and Their Structures

28 November 2022

The Mr.Goodfish program publishes quarterly lists of recommended seasonal wild-caught species, as well as an annual list of farmed species.

List of farmed species

Each species recommended by the program meets specific criteria, based primarily on three main pillars: environmental impact, farming practices, and feed. For Ecuadorian shrimp, a social pillar is also included.

Once a year, a committee of experts comprising stakeholders from the aquaculture sector meets to discuss various aspects of these specifications, as well as their improvements and developments. The progress of the various producers enrolled in the program is also monitored.

List of Wild Species

This list is revised four times a year, according to the seasons; it is established based on the most recent scientific advice and is based on three criteria: seasonality, size at first sexual maturity, and stock status.

Recommendations for wild species are made by coastal region: English Channel/North Sea, Brittany/Atlantic, and Mediterranean. Each coastline is represented by a regional coordinator to strengthen the program’s local roots: Nausicaá for the English Channel/North Sea coast, Mr. Jérôme NICOL in Brittany/Atlantic, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation along with the Center for the Discovery of the Sea and the Mountains (Nice) for the Mediterranean coast.

For each coast and each season, a committee of industry experts (scientists, fishermen, fish wholesalers, processors, fishmongers, restaurateurs, and supermarkets) meets to discuss which species to recommend for the coming season. The representation of the entire industry allows for final amendments and the final approval of this list.
