Alternatives to polystyrene boxes

6 May 2026

Enacted in July 2021, the Climate Law bans polystyrene packaging after 2025, as waste from this material accounts for more than a third of the plastic found in the environment.

But what about the fishing industry, where polystyrene reigns supreme?

To address this, models of reusable and recyclable plastic crates were initially developed for fishmongers to use for transport.

Large retailers also quickly embraced this initiative by implementing these same types of reusable and recyclable packaging (co-products, PET, etc.).
Industry giants, such as Danone, have chosen to replace polystyrene with PET (polyethylene terephthalate), the most recyclable plastic with a lower carbon footprint.
Auchan has swapped these crates for compostable trays made from co-products.
Agromousquetaires’ seafood division, meanwhile, has opted to use PP (polypropylene) crates.
