Description
A large flatfish with a nearly circular, diamond-shaped body. It is a "left-eyed" species. The skin lacks scales but is covered with bony tubercles on the eyed side. Its color is highly variable, matching the seabed (camouflage), ranging from sandy grey to speckled brown. It is a voracious predator that feeds on other bottom-dwelling fish (such as sand eels or gobies), as well as large crustaceans and bivalves. Size: Max 100 cm (typically 50–70 cm). Max weight: 25 kg.
Habitat
A marine, demersal species (bottom-dwelling). It is mainly found on sandy, rocky, or gravelly bottoms. It shows a good tolerance for brackish waters. Usually found at depths between 20 and 70 meters, occasionally down to 100 meters.
Distribution
Distributed in the Northeast Atlantic, from the Arctic Circle down to Morocco. It is very common in the North Sea, the English Channel, and throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
