Description
A bivalve shell, elongated or triangular in shape, usually a glossy blue-black, sometimes with brownish hues. The interior is pearly with a dark purple rim.
Habitat
A benthic species that lives primarily in the intertidal zone (the area affected by the tides). It attaches itself firmly to hard substrates (rocks, piers, and mooring lines) using its byssus.
Distribution
Widespread distribution throughout the North Atlantic: from the European coast (from Russia to southern France) to the North American coast (from Canada to North Carolina). In the English Channel and the North Atlantic: Mytilus edulis is the primary species cultivated, typically on mussel beds or ropes.
