Description

The yellowtail flounder is a flatfish belonging to the Pleuronectidae family. It has an oval, flattened body, typical of flatfish. It is a right-sided flatfish (the eyes are on the right).
Its upper side is rust-brown with irregular spots, while its underside is pale. Its gills, including the tail, are yellow in color, which is the origin of its common name.
Habitat
It is a marine, demersal species that inhabits sandy to muddy bottoms. It is most commonly found in waters between 36 and 91 meters deep, but it can be observed at depths ranging from 27 to 364 meters. It prefers waters with temperatures ideally between 3 and 5°C.
Distribution
It is found in the northwestern Atlantic, from Labrador in Canada to Chesapeake Bay (USA).
