Description

Until the end of May.
The body is oval, tall, and laterally compressed. The coloration is silvery. It is characterized by 8 to 9 dark transverse stripes (alternating between distinct bands and lighter bands) that often fade with age. A very distinct black spot is present on the caudal peduncle (just before the tail), shaped like a "saddle". The posterior edge of the caudal fin is black. It has sharp incisors at the front and several rows of molars at the back for crushing shells. On average 20 to 25 cm, but it can reach a maximum size of 45 cm. It is an omnivore with carnivorous tendencies. It feeds mainly on small crustaceans, mollusks, echinoderms (sea urchins), and sometimes algae.
Habitat
A marine and benthic species (living near the seabed). It is found from the surface down to a depth of about 50 meters. It particularly favors rocky bottoms and turbulent areas (surf zones, breakwaters) where it forages for food. It is also found in Posidonia meadows.
Distribution
From the Bay of Biscay to South Africa. Very common throughout the Mediterranean basin. Found in the Black Sea, though less frequently. Found along the coasts of South Africa and as far as Mozambique.
