Description
The red monkfish has a flattened body, an almost circular head that is wider than its body, a wide mouth with sharp teeth, and the first ray of its dorsal fin modified into a "fishing filament." Its diet consists mainly of fish and, less commonly, mollusks and crustaceans.
Habitat
It is a benthic species that lives near sandy or muddy bottoms, from the coast down to a depth of 1,000 meters.
Distribution
It is found in the eastern Atlantic, from the Barents Sea to the waters off West Africa, as well as in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
