Description
The body is spindle-shaped, elongated, and slightly compressed laterally. It is a powerful fish, built for speed. The back is generally grayish-blue or olive, the sides are lighter, and the belly is silvery white. An amber or golden band often runs along the sides. A distinctive dark line runs across the eye to the base of the dorsal fin. The second dorsal fin and the anal fin have raised anterior lobes. It lacks finlets behind the dorsal and anal fins. It can reach an impressive size of 190 cm (total length), although the common size is around 100 cm. It is a carnivorous predator that feeds primarily on other fish (such as flying fish or small tuna), as well as squid and crustaceans.
Habitat
A benthopelagic species (living between the open water and the seafloor) and an oceanodromous species (migratory). It is generally found at depths of 20 to 70 meters, but can descend to as deep as 360 meters. Adults inhabit deep reefs, rocky areas, and sometimes shipwrecks. It prefers subtropical and warm temperate waters.
Distribution
From Nova Scotia (Canada) to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. From the Bay of Biscay to South Africa, including the Mediterranean Sea. From South Africa and East Africa to Japan, southern Australia, and New Caledonia. Around the Hawaiian Islands.
