Description

It is a small fish in the Gadidae family (a cousin of the cod). It has three dorsal fins and two anal fins that almost touch at their bases. It has a rather short snout and an upper jaw that extends slightly beyond the lower jaw. It has a long, well-developed chin barbel under its chin. It is one of the smallest members of its family. It generally measures between 15 and 20 cm, with a recorded maximum of 40 cm.

Habitat
The Mediterranean capelin is a benthopelagic species. It is found primarily on soft bottoms composed of sand or mud, but is also sometimes found on rocky or gravelly bottoms. It lives at depths ranging from 10 to 400 meters, but is particularly abundant on the continental shelf between 50 and 150 meters.
Distribution
It is found throughout the Mediterranean basin, including the Adriatic Sea, but is absent from the Black Sea.
