On Sustainable Gastronomy Day, June 18, 2025, as part of the European Green Week initiative, the EU-funded projects Mr.Goodfish3.0 and VeriFish will host a special online event titled “Can We Still Eat Seafood? Adopting Responsible Consumption and Production of Seafood, Freshwater and Aquaculture Products to Protect Marine Biodiversity.” This timely discussion will examine how responsible seafood choices can support marine ecosystems while securing food systems and livelihoods for generations to come.

About the Event

With 37.7% of wild seafood stocks currently overexploited (FAO, 2024), the future of seafood is under intense scrutiny. But the question is no longer whether we can continue to eat seafood, but rather how we can do so responsibly. This virtual event will bring together a panel of experts to discuss strategies that align seafood production and consumption with ecological, economic, and social sustainability.

Set against the backdrop of Sustainable Gastronomy Day, the session will highlight how circular economy principles, such as reducing waste, improving efficiency, and promoting inclusive practices, can transform the seafood sector. From consumer education to sourcing transparency, the focus will be on practical, innovative solutions for ensuring seafood remains a viable and ethical food choice.

This 90-minute webinar will explore key themes such as:

  • Raising consumer awareness about responsible seafood choices

  • Integrating circular economy practices into seafood production and supply chains

  • Supporting small-scale fisheries and sustainable aquaculture

  • Building a resilient, inclusive blue economy that benefits communities and ecosystems alike

This panel session will provide a platform for exchange between industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and sustainability advocates. But most important, it will be an opportunity to start being part of the change toward a more sustainable ecosystem.

Meet the Organizers

Mr.Goodfish3.0 builds on a successful awareness campaign promoting responsible seafood consumption. Now in its third phase, the initiative is expanding its reach across Europe by upgrading the Mr.Goodfish app and co-creating engagement tools with local stakeholders in five diverse marine and freshwater regions. The goal: empower citizens to make informed choices that support both ocean health and coastal economies.

VeriFish is developing a pioneering framework of verifiable sustainability indicators for seafood, using EU and global data. By combining a prototype web app, sector-specific communication tools, and practical guidelines for the retail and hospitality sectors, VeriFish is working to improve transparency and trust in what sustainable seafood really means — from catch to kitchen.

Both projects are funded under Horizon Europe and contribute to the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean & Watersand together, they aim to drive meaningful change through collaboration, transparency, and innovation.
