On October 24th, 2025, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) successfully hosted the educational event “Tales of the Blue: Engaging Children in Ocean-friendly Storytelling” in collaboration with Mr.Goodfish3.0. The event welcomed 75 enthusiastic primary school students and teachers for a day filled with discovery, creativity, and environmental learning, all centred on the themes of overfishing, fish species, and marine biodiversity.

The aim of the event was to ignite children’s curiosity about the ocean and foster a deeper understanding of the delicate balance that sustains marine life. Students had the unique opportunity to interview local fishermen and coastal restaurant owners, gaining firsthand insights into maritime occupations and the challenges they face. They were also introduced to Mediterranean fish species and fish markets, deepening their awareness of how biodiversity and sustainable practices are essential for island communities like Cyprus.
At the same time, a series of interactive games and hands-on activities immersed students in the fascinating world of the sea. Divided into three stations, they explored the uses and importance of the ocean for humans, identified Mediterranean fish species, and discovered the peculiarities of marine-related professions. Through these real-world scenarios, the children learned how overfishing impacts ecosystems and livelihoods, and how informed decisions in fishing, business, or everyday consumption can protect ocean health. The interactive format encouraged teamwork, empathy, and environmental responsibility, helping students connect with marine conservation in a meaningful and memorable way.
Teachers also played a key role, participating in workshops designed to introduce innovative educational tools and creative teaching methods. They explored how to integrate marine science and sustainability into their lessons through storytelling and play-based learning, empowering them to inspire environmental awareness in their classrooms.
The “Tales of the Blue” initiative forms part of CMMI’s broader mission to advance ocean literacy and sustainability through education and community engagement. By merging scientific knowledge with creativity and collaboration, CMMI and Mr.Goodfish3.0 are nurturing a new generation of ocean-conscious citizens who understand that every action, no matter how small, can make a difference in protecting our seas.
As the event concluded, both students and teachers left with new knowledge, fresh inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the ocean that connects and sustains us all.
