Co-organized by two Horizon Europe-funded projects, <\/span><b>Mr.Goodfish3.0<\/b><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/verifish.info\/\"><b>VeriFish<\/b><\/a><span>, both part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe\/eu-missions-horizon-europe\/restore-our-ocean-and-waters_en\">EU Mission <\/a><\/span><b>&#8220;Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030&#8221;<\/b><span>, the event explored the essential role of informed seafood choices in safeguarding marine biodiversity and supporting resilient coastal livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Navigating a Complex Value Chain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>With marine ecosystems under increasing pressure and public interest in sustainable diets rising, the webinar emphasized a fundamental challenge: <\/span><b>how can consumers make responsible seafood choices if they don\u2019t have access to trustworthy information?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>Speakers and panelists addressed the urgent need for <\/span><b>transparent, traceable, and accessible data<\/b><span> throughout the seafood value chain. They also acknowledged the intricacies of seafood labeling, especially <\/span><b>post-harvest for wild catch<\/b><span>, where gaps often obscure origin, handling, and sustainability details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The contribution to our discussion, moderated by Clara Boissenin (European Project Manager at Ecsite &#8211; The European Network of Science Centres &amp; Museums), came from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sara Pittonet Gaiarin<\/b><span>, Senior Manager at Trust-IT Services<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Buisson<\/b><span>, Project Officer in charge of the Mr.Goodfish Mission at Nausicaa Centre National de la Mer<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alistair Lane<\/b><span>, Executive Director at the European Aquaculture Society<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Si\u00e2n Astley<\/b><span>, Secretary General at EuroFIR AISBL<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Michelle Boonstra<\/b><span>, Project Manager and Co-founder at Catch Welfare Platform<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Issues Discussed<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>The discussion highlighted several pressing topics. A central concern was the <\/span><b>lack of standardized, reliable information available to consumers<\/b><span> who wish to make sustainable seafood choices. This issue is closely linked to ongoing challenges in seafood traceability and labeling, particularly in the post-harvest stages, which often obscure key details about origin and sustainability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Participants also emphasized the <\/span><b>vital role of responsible aquaculture in complementing wild fisheries<\/b><span>, especially as demand for seafood continues to grow. In this context, the potential for integrating invasive species into sustainable seafood strategies was explored as both an environmental and economic opportunity.The sector is also grappling with significant economic pressures from rising operational costs to the persistent public perception of seafood as an expensive protein source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the same time, there is growing recognition of <\/span><b>the need to incorporate animal welfare considerations<\/b><span> into aquaculture and fisheries practices, ensuring that sustainability extends beyond environmental impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another challenge discussed was the <\/span><b>limited public familiarity with underutilized and alternative seafood species<\/b><span>, which presents both a barrier and an opportunity for more sustainable consumption patterns. Through initiatives like Mr.Goodfish 3.0 and VeriFish, new tools and knowledge are being developed to help consumers, producers, and policymakers act in the interest of both <\/span><b>people and the planet<\/b><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As trying to answer our initial question, Can we still eat seafood?, we can indeed.
