Description
This is a 'right-eyed' flatfish (its eyes are on the right side). Its body is elongated and oval, tapering toward the tail, giving it a wedge-like shape. Its snout is rounded, and its mouth is small and arched. The upper eye is slightly further forward than the lower eye. The ocellated side is generally gray-brown or beige, dotted with small, diffuse dark spots. The pectoral fin on the eye side has a characteristic black spot at its tip. It is a small sole. Its typical size is 15 to 22 cm, with a recorded maximum of 30 cm.
Habitat
It particularly favors soft substrates, mainly fine sand and mud. It is generally found at depths of 10 to 100 meters, although it can descend to depths of up to 450 meters in some regions. It burrows into the sand to escape predators and feeds mainly on small benthic invertebrates (crustaceans, worms, and mollusks).
Distribution
It is found in the eastern Atlantic and, to a lesser extent, in the Mediterranean. It ranges from the Bay of Biscay in the north (where it is very abundant, particularly near estuaries such as the Gironde) to the coast of South Africa. It is found in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, but is less common there than in the Atlantic.
