Legambiente was founded in 1980 and to the present day it is the most widespread Italian environmental association: more than 1000 local groups, 20 regional committees, more than 115,000 active members and supporters. It is a non-political association, open to everybody no matter their religious or political beliefs and it is financed by its members and supporters. Legambiente has a Scientific Committee comprising of experts from different fields. This association has been active for many years in the protection of the marine environment and its resources and it also constantly promotes campaigns for the development of a sustainable fishery. Legambiente is officially recognized by the Italian Department of the Environment as an association of environmental interest; it belongs to the Bureau Européen de l'Environnement, which includes all the main European environmental associations, and to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). It is also recognized by the Italian Foreign Office as a development NGO.

The research centre of marine biology of the Ligurian Sea (BIOLMAR) consists of a group of marine biology experts from DIPTERIS (Department for the study of the Territory and its Resources) of the University of Genoa where many professors and researchers have been studying the marine environment in all its components for decades. Researches in BIOLMAR Centre aim to harmonize productive needs and environmental conservation, fruition and preservation of natural resources in the Ligurian Sea, including the management of all the protected marine areas such as Pelagos Sanctuary for Cetaceans. The World Wide Fund for Nature is the biggest organization for the conservation of nature in the world. Born in 1961, it consists of 24 national organizations, 5 affiliated organizations and 222 Programme Offices in 96 different countries. It counts more than 5 million members and it manages more than 2,000 projects every year for the protection of the biodiversity. The association is built on National Offices which, in every single country, work autonomously but always accordingly to the international goals of WWF. WWF also works through “Programme Offices” whose aim is the realization of specific projects concerning conservation, often involving different countries. The international headquarters are in Gland, Switzerland. In 1966 WWF was founded in Italy where it now works thanks to a central staff in Rome and 19 regional sections which support the ecoregional programme (Alps Ecoregion and Mediterranean Ecoregion). The association is very widespread in Italy with more than 200 local structures. WWF Italy has been conducting several campaigns for the marine resources sustainable exploitation in the last decades. The Italian association is a “ONLUS”, that is a non-profit organization of social utility. Recently it has officially become a “NGO” (Non-governmental organization) as well.
Fano Lab. of Marine Biology and Fishery, Bologne University

The Fano Laboratory of Marine Biology and Fishery is the department of the Bologne University that exclusively conducts researches on fishery and marine organisms since 1939. These researches include studies about biological and technical aspects of fishery, the biology of some species of marine animals, the problems for Ichtyoplankton, in particular for eggs and Thunnidae, Anchovies and Sardines larvae, the evaluation of biological resources with different methods, some types of mariculture, the realization of artificial underwater structures and the creation of repopulation marine areas. The scientific activity has led to the publication of more than 150 studies and it is completely focused on the biological research on the marine environment and the sustainable exploitation of its resources. The experts of the Laboratory participate in several scientific Committees both national and international.

The Fondazione Acquario di Genova ONLUS was founded in 2003 by Costa Edutainment S.p.A. together with the City of Genoa, the Province of Genoa, the Univeristy of Genoa and lately joined by the Amici dell’Acquario Association and the World Ocean Association. The Foundation is an ONLUS association, officially recognized by the Liguria Region. Its work includes educational and awareness activities, researches about conservation and sustainable management of water resources, with specific projects run both in Italy and in several other countries. Since the beginning the Foundation has planned activities for a rational exploitation of fishing resources, never forgetting to educate the public.

Consortium Uniprom was founded in 1995 by Association of co-operatives and shipowners in the fishery sector: AGCI Agrital, Associazione Piscicoltori Italiani, Federcoopesca, Federpesca, Lega Pesca and Unci Pesca. Its goal is to promote fish production and consumption.
Uniprom’s accrued experience comes from implementation of programmes financed by the European Union and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest Polices. This has made the Consorzio ann efficient vehicle for wide-ranging intervention in the Italian fishing industry :

- Traceability and quality systems for production and companies
- Support for transnational projects
